TOP 5 RECRUITING MISTAKES

In a time when recruiting is becoming increasingly challenging, there are a few things that any company can do to ensure that their recruiting processes are working effectively.  There are also a few things you should avoid.  Here are our top 5 recruiting mistakes.

1.      Relying solely on a Traditional Interview
Let’s think about what’s best in the hiring process. Traditionally we start and end the hiring process with interviews. Think about having the candidate do a presentation or a role play in order to give you a broader view of them. This may be especially useful for senior management roles.

2.      Forgetting to mention the Benefits

Put yourself in your candidate’s shoes, and tune into that most listened to radio station in the world, WIIFM (What’s In It For Me).  Sell the benefits of working for you. More than ever, recruitment is a two-way process. The candidate is interviewing you as you are interviewing them.

3.     Making a Hiring Decision too quickly
Statistically we are told that we make a decision to hire or not hire a person within the first five minutes, then look for behaviours from the candidate to justify our decision for the balance of the interview. Truly take your time, and use all of the interaction to make the right decision.

4.      Don’t offer a dead-end position.
Give them room to grow. Good hires expect and appreciate being challenged.

5.     Misrepresenting the Position – Overpromise.
As in Customer Service, you will find yourself in a world of hurt if you over-promise and under-deliver.  If the position is entry level, with room for advancement, don’t stress the advancement component .  Be honest to a fault.
