So You Want to do Business in America

September 14, 2016 | By Katie Penstone

Watching the budding, beautiful, bromance of Trudeau and Obama, its possible that more than one Canadian business owner may be having exporting and international expansion day dreams. And really, can you blame them? For many they are simply that, dreams of future possibilities, and for others – perhaps it was the inspirational boost you didn’t know you were looking for, (and maybe none of the above apply) but either way let’s talk about that dream – exporting and international expansion into the American market.

Roosevelt was right in many ways, and arguably his wisdom is more true now than it was on his visit to Quebec City in 1936. Since the signing of the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1989, Canada’s bi-lateral trade in goods and services with the USA has more than tripled. The relationship between our two countries has deepened and helped create jobs and prosperity in both nations with two-way trade exchanging approximately $2.4 billion in goods and services every day in 2015.1

Welcome back readers, to the second installment of our Social Media blog! By now you probably have your social media going (if you didn’t already), and as promised, we are diving into the deep end of social media marketing and looking at how to turn those followers into buyers.

Maybe I can just make a Facebook page and be done with this social media stuff.”

The True Value of Relationship

April 8, 2016 | By Lester Cey

Our company, LPC Consulting recently was acquired by Morris Interactive and as I write this we are a few months in to our new relationship. It has become apparent that while some things have changed most of what I do in a day has remained the same. Our division of Morris Interactive spends a lot of time on growing existing relationships to help our clients expand their market share.

Now that we have successfully integrated through the first quarter, I thought it was time to share some of the knowledge and insight I have gained over the past 30 years of business in Saskatchewan.

I was thinking about what might be a good focus and as I listened to Mayor Don Atchison give his opinion on the provincial election results this morning, something he said resonated with me.

Beating the Canadian Economic Blues

March 11, 2016 | By Katie Penstone

Today, Statistic Canada released the latest statistics regarding Canada’s unemployment rate, dropping the proverbial bomb that last month’s figures were the highest since March 2013. Canadian economists were particularly surprised by this, especially since they forecast that Canada would add almost 8,500 jobs in February of 2016. This puts Canada’s unemployment rate at an almost three-year high, with polling showing Canadian confidence in the economy is at an all-time low, with the prairie provinces leading the charge.

Now is the Time

February 18, 2016 | By Katie Penstone

“Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.”
– Ernest Hemingway

At some point everyone has heard that a positive attitude can make all the difference, even in the bleakest of situations. But becoming successful is about more than just having a vision, it is about maintaining that vision, even when times are tough. Dr. Carol Dweck, one of the leading researchers in the field of motivation, recently published her study demonstrating how attitude, rather than IQ, is a better predictor of success. She postulates that people’s core attitudes can be categorised as being either of a fixed or a growth mindset. Dweck found that individuals with growth mindsets outperformed those with fixed mindsets, even when they have a lower IQ. This is accredited to the way growth mindset individuals approach challenges, embracing as opportunities to grow and develop, rather than as roadblocks preventing them from achieving their goals. According to Dweck, success is centred on how we deal with failure, “failure is information – we label it failure, but it’s more like, ‘this didn’t work, and I’m a problem solver, so I’ll try something else.’” Failure is always an option. Failure creates opportunities for growth and success – if you approach those challenges and failures with a growth mind-set, like the many successful entrepreneurs we talked about in our last blog.

Pure Perseverance

January 11, 2016 | By Katie Penstone

“I am convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance”.
- Steve Jobs, The late Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO of Apple Inc.

2016. A New Year, new goals, and new challenges on the horizon – with a global economic cloud on many people’s vistas. But before you start to spiral into a meltdown – stop – and breathe.

Let’s take a moment to remember that this isn’t the first recession Canada - or the world - has trudged though, and it certainly won’t be the last. Instead of worrying, let’s take hold of the opportunity that this recession is presenting us on a silver (although slightly tarnished) platter. Out of great strife comes some of the most incredible inventions and entrepreneurs, just look at Sir Richard Branson! The man is arguably one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time, and he speaks openly (and arguably fondly) of his own setbacks and failures, acknowledging the profoundly positive impact they had on his success. One of the most difficult lessons a person will learn is that the path to success is not smooth sailing, it is fraught with turbulent times and sometimes, even when you do everything right you can capsize or even sink. But it is that pressure that creates diamonds out of coal.

A True Captain

December 16, 2015

“They don’t understand that a true captain must pay attention to the seasons of the year, the sky, the stars, the winds, and all that pertains to his craft, if he’s really to be the ruler of a ship.”
–Socrates The Republic of Plato Book VI

Bringing a new team member on board can be a daunting task. Not only are you looking to find a candidate who meets the qualifications, but you are also looking for someone who will compliment and add to your current company culture.

Skills can be taught and learned, but it is far more challenging to try and teach something as abstract and innate as company culture – and sometimes it just isn’t possible. To avoid situations such as these, the logical step is to interview for cultural fit – but how?

It is a normal part of a business’s life cycle to have employee turnover on a semi-regular basis, and as baby-boomers begin to retire in larger numbers this turnover is happening more frequently. So, how do you preserve and grow your company culture in a positive way with a work force often in flux?

Communicating Your Way To Positive Company Culture

October 25, 2015 | By Katie Penstone

"Be your own entrepreneur whether or not you work for someone else." – Rebecca Minkoff

Remember hearing about Amazon’s blunder on the work culture front? No? That’s ok, let us pause for a moment while you get up to speed with the New York Times expose, "Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace".

Now that we are all on the same metaphorical page, it is important to remember that company culture does not have a set definition, it is generated by the communication and interactions of your team and your leaders.

While your company culture may need to be more competitive, if that is the type of market you operate within – there is a fine line between creating a competitive company culture and instilling "purposeful Darwinism", which may catapult you from the pan and into the fire, as we witnessed in Amazon’s case.

The Changing Faces of Human Resources

October 7, 2015

"Train your people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to." – Richard Branson

People. The most valuable and the most volatile resource your organization has- constantly changing and growing, like the ebb and flow of the tides.

Whether you’re a part of a new start-up or a well-established business, your people are your most valuable asset, one that can be the key to the ultimate success of an organization.

The question is, how do you maximize the potential of your most important resource?
