Accepting New Applications April 1, 2017

Returning after an extended hiatus, the Canada-Saskatchewan Job Grant (CSJG) provides employers with funding to train new or existing employees to meet the skill requirements for available jobs.

The CSJG covers
5/6 of the training costs, for businesses with less than 50 employees, and 2/3 of the training costs for businesses with more than 50 employees. This grant is open to businesses and non-profits in Saskatchewan. Employees must complete at least 25 hours of training within 52 weeks.

And really, can you blame them? Today, Statistic Canada released the latest statistics regarding Canada’s unemployment rate, dropping the proverbial bomb that last month’s figures were the highest since March 2013. Canadian economists were particularly surprised by this, especially since they forecast that Canada would add almost 8,500 jobs in February of 2016. This puts Canada’s unemployment rate at an almost three-year high, with polling showing Canadian confidence in the economy is at an all-time low, with the prairie provinces leading the charge.

At some point everyone has heard that a positive attitude can make all the difference, even in the bleakest of situations. But becoming successful is about more than just having a vision, it is about maintaining that vision, even when times are tough. Dr. Carol Dweck, one of the leading researchers in the field of motivation, recently published her study demonstrating how attitude, rather than IQ, is a better predictor of success. She postulates that people’s core attitudes can be categorised as being either of a fixed or a growth mindset. Dweck found that individuals with growth mindsets outperformed those with fixed mindsets, even when they have a lower IQ. This is accredited to the way growth mindset individuals approach challenges, embracing as opportunities to grow and develop, rather than as roadblocks preventing them from achieving their goals. According to Dweck, success is centred on how we deal with failure, “failure is information – we label it failure, but it’s more like, ‘this didn’t work, and I’m a problem solver, so I’ll try something else.’” Failure is always an option. Failure creates opportunities for growth and success – if you approach those challenges and failures with a growth mind-set, like the many successful entrepreneurs we talked about in our last blog.

2016. A New Year, new goals, and new challenges on the horizon – with a global economic cloud on many people’s vistas. But before you start to spiral into a meltdown – stop – and breathe.

Let’s take a moment to remember that this isn’t the first recession Canada - or the world - has trudged though, and it certainly won’t be the last. Instead of worrying, let’s take hold of the opportunity that this recession is presenting us on a silver (although slightly tarnished) platter. Out of great strife comes some of the most incredible inventions and entrepreneurs, just look at Sir Richard Branson! The man is arguably one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time, and he speaks openly (and arguably fondly) of his own setbacks and failures, acknowledging the profoundly positive impact they had on his success. One of the most difficult lessons a person will learn is that the path to success is not smooth sailing, it is fraught with turbulent times and sometimes, even when you do everything right you can capsize or even sink. But it is that pressure that creates diamonds out of coal.

Skills can be taught and learned, but it is far more challenging to try and teach something as abstract and innate as company culture – and sometimes it just isn’t possible. To avoid situations such as these, the logical step is to interview for cultural fit – but how?

It is a normal part of a business’s life cycle to have employee turnover on a semi-regular basis, and as baby-boomers begin to retire in larger numbers this turnover is happening more frequently. So, how do you preserve and grow your company culture in a positive way with a work force often in flux?

Now that we are all on the same metaphorical page, it is important to remember that company culture does not have a set definition, it is generated by the communication and interactions of your team and your leaders.

While your company culture may need to be more competitive, if that is the type of market you operate within – there is a fine line between creating a competitive company culture and instilling "purposeful Darwinism", which may catapult you from the pan and into the fire, as we witnessed in Amazon’s case.
