Investing in the Future by Investing in Our Community

Times are changing… as they always do! In Saskatchewan we are recovering from an economic downturn after a period of abundant prosperity. So often, in these times, budgets for training opportunities are the first things to be cut or downsized. However, it is these training opportunities that can be vital to jump starting new business ventures and employee morale.

Many businesses can benefit from investing in courses like Aboriginal awareness and diversity training. Knowledge in these areas opens up doors for new partnerships, unexplored markets, and maximizing employee productivity and efficiency. Some of Canada’s largest and most successful businesses, such as the Royal Bank of Canada, Cameco, and SaskPower, recognize the value and importance of cultivating diversity in the workplace.

I am from the Thunderchild First Nation and I have been developing and facilitating educational workshops for many years. But if someone had told me that when I graduated from university that I would be doing what I am doing now I would have laughed. But there is a definite need for this type of training in our community.

The Aboriginal community is young in Saskatchewan and it is growing faster than the non-Aboriginal population. By 2016, over 30% of the population 15 – 29 years of age will be Aboriginal. This is our future labour pool and a potential market for many businesses in our community.  Are you ready?
